Hof Palace
Welcome to the Magical World of the Baroque!
In the eighteenth century, Hof Palace, one of the largest and most magnificent noble seats in the Habsburg empire, was the setting for some of the period’s most splendid celebrations and festivities. This imperial tradition has again come to life. After the faithful restoration of palace and grounds, a unique Baroque artistic creation is now open to the festively inclined visitor of today. Lavish state and private rooms, a splendidly landscaped Baroque garden, and an idyllic manor farm: living history invites visitors to explore this fascinating epoch.
The Palace
Hof Palace was built in 1725 as the country seat of the military commander and politician Prince Eugene of Savoy and was given its present appearance in 1755 under the ownership of Empress Maria Theresa. The wealth and cultural interest of its noble owners is apparent not only in the architecture but also in the costly valuable furnishings and exquisite works of art. Painstaking, detective-like research work has made it possible to identify large parts of the original furnishings, which were then put back in their original positions after careful restoration.
The Garden
Few Baroque gardens in Europe rival the magnificence and refinement of that at Hof Palace with its seven terraces. However, over the centuries, this artistically landscaped masterpiece almost entirely disappeared underground. Thanks to archaeological findings and research into historical documents it has been possible to reconstruct the garden in all its former splendour. The present-day visitor can now see this magnificent garden exactly as it was beheld by Prince Eugene’s vistors in the Baroque period.
The Meierhof (Manor Farm)
Baroque country life awaits guests at the Palace’s Meierhof. The Weinviertel Garden, the Nibbling & Jam Garden as well as the Kitchen Garden offer opportunities to taste freshly picked regional fruit and vegetable specialities and harvest all kind of aromatic and medicinal herbs. Only a few steps away, in Prince Eugene’s Orangerie, Mediterranean flora unfold their enchanting beauty. Finally, in the stables and on the meadows, visitors will fine many rare and endearing animals, such as Norica horses, spectacled sheep, camels, white donkeys and Hungarian grey cattle.
