Vienna Hofburg
Welcome to the Imperial Winter Residence
This extensive complex of buildings, containing 19 courtyards and 18 wings, was formerly the political centre of the Habsburg Monarchy. Today, the Austrian Federal President as well as numerous ministers and state secretaries have their offices in the splendid state rooms of the Hofburg. Many important cultural institutions are also headquartered in this former imperial winter residence.
The experience
The visitor to the Hofburg needs only a single ticket to open doors to the top three highlights of imperial Austria:
The Imperial Silver Collection provides a glimpse of the lavish luxury of the imperial table settings. In addition to precious services, exquisite porcelain and centrepieces up to 30 meters in length, the legendary “Imperial Napkin” is also on display: a square metre of fine damask folded for the imperial table with a technique that is still a closely garded secret, and one that even very few employees of the Silver Collection know. The Sisi Museum presents a differentiated picture of the legendary Empress Elisabeth. This unique, sensitive presentation explores the “Sisi myth” while also shedding light on the many mysteries surrounding this fascinating woman. Further information to the Sisi Museum »
In the Imperial Apartments the visitor is a guest in the home of Austria´s most famous rulers. The 19 work, living and reception rooms occupeid by Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife, Elisabeth (Sisi), are furnished in a historically authentic manner – and in their relative modesty offer a striking contrast to the luxurious splendour that characterises the summer residence of Schönbrunn.
