Esterházy Palace
Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt is one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Austria and presents a fascinating view of the resplendent life once lived at the court of the Princes Esterházy.
The origins of Esterházy Palace go back to a castle of the thirteenth century which has since been continually remodelled and extended. In 1649, the castle came into the hands of the Esterházy family and in the second half of the seventeenth century was remodelled under Paul I into a baroque palace. It was to be the main residence of the family for more than 300 years.
This exhibition “Highlights of Esterházy Palace” offers the visitor a unique experience, with its superb collections, the palace’s fascinating 300 years of architectural history, the lifestyle of the princely family, and valuable items from the collections of the Esterházy Private Foundation.
The unique acoustics and atmosphere of Haydn Hall inspired the composer Joseph Haydn to write his wonderful music. He was in the service of the princes for over forty years, and the Haydn Hall is named after him. In the exhibition “Haydn explosive” impressive sound and video animations transport you on a monumental scale into the princely cosmos and Haydn’s world of music.
The new exhibition “The Apartment of the Princess” presents the women of the Esterházy dynasty – their quarters and interior design. Three women with different fates in their role as Princess and head of the household at the castle in Eisenstadt.
Among cultural highlights Esterházy presents culinary themes like our Wine museum, the wine shop “Selektion Burgenland” and the gourmet restaurant Henrici.
