The magnificent ensemble consisting of palace and gardens was the summer residence of the imperial family and resplendent centre of court life. Following the end of the monarchy, the imperial splendour was preserved through a high level of commitment, and to this very day Schönbrunn Palace provides the worthy setting for grand official receptions and festive banquets.
in 1996 the palace and park complex was named an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The experience
In Schönbrunn the visitor embarks aon an unforgettable journey through time into the world of Habsburg´s imperial dynasty. Depending on the tour chosen, it is possible to view as many as 40 rooms. The visitor can marvel at the 40-metre long Festival Hall as well as Emperor Franz Joseph´s Bedroom and the Million Room, which under Maria Theresia was furnished in truly lacish splendour.
No less impressive is the tour of the park´s extensive gardens, which were laid out by Europe´s most renowned garden architects. In addition to elaborate flower beds with embroidery-like motifs and imposing fountains, the grounds also contain a Maze, a Palm House and the so-called Privy Garden, featuring idyllic pergolas and a valuable collection of citrus trees.
Visitors should not miss taking a ride on the Panorama Train up to the Gloriette. Frim the Panorama Terrace, high above the palace and gardens, one enjoys tremendous views over Vienna.
